The Success Paradox

What if someone told you that your success is an outcome of your luck? Is that enough for you to lash out and explain how your hard work and dedication have gotten you to the position where you are right now? What if I told you that your success is indeed a product of two contradictions? So why is the nature of your success contradictory? Before you could understand that, let's take a couple of minutes to get to know these contradictions. Contradiction 1: Your belief that it's your hard work and countless sleepless nights that have abled you to climb that success ladder and stand at the top. But, on the other hand, Contradiction 2: Your awareness that Contradiction 1 is a lie and your luck has played an important role in getting you where you are. This antithetical concept is the Success Paradox. But why does your success require to be paradoxical? The truth is, it doesn't. But it's the best approach that one should take to remain in touch with reality. It is human natu...

IS INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM DATED?

One is supposed to tie the knot with a partner after attaining 21 years of age, drink after 21, and drive after 18. All of these are examples of such life choices which can have a long-lasting impact on life itself. Naturally, we need to have some basic understanding of our reality before we can indulge ourselves in a choice that can either make our lives heaven on earth or throw them down in the valley of hell. That much we understand. As John Wick would say, "On that, we agree." But, I often wonder, who was the fool who decided that attaining 16 years of age was enough to make a decision regarding something which lays the foundation of your entire future? 16 years of age is when you can apply to have a learners' driving license for a scooter that comes with a 50cc engine (or below). Ironically, that is exactly the age at which this nation's youth is supposed to select one particular field, out of the holy trinity of Science, Commerce, and Humanities, and walk down t...

THE ART OF REPETITION

How does one become an expert at anything? By carefully observing the act? Or, through studying it in books. Some might argue that people are born with some capabilities which make them good with certain things. This conjecture will make Charles Darwin quite angry. After all, it was him who proved Lamarck wrong and told the world that acquired traits cannot be inherited. So, we are back at our question, how does one become an expert at something?  The simple answer is, through repetition. We, humans, are natural-born mimics. This statement will also make Darwin very angry. The thing is, nobody is born with a set of traits that make them an expert at certain things. Granted, genetics might favour some individuals more than others. Like, a heavyweight person whose genetics allow him to put on more muscle mass will surely be better suited for certain contact sports like wrestling, as compared to someone whose genetics prevent him from putting on a substantial muscle mass. But, it is...

COVID-19 EULOGY

Hi there. I am sure that I need no introductions. I have made quite a name for myself in the past one and a half years. It wasn’t easy though… I had to do a lot of hard work. At some points, I genuinely felt that I wouldn't make it. I felt that the vaccine will just throw me off the block and fling me into the black hole of oblivion. But, you did not let that happen. You, the common people. The citizens who acted as my savior. The people who refused to remain distanced, those who pulled down their masks, those who altogether refused to wear masks. Every person's efforts count. You welcomed me in your homes with open arms and treated me like family when everyone else in the world cast me out. You guys just took my breath away... And in turn, I took away yours. Speaking of breathlessness, this wouldn't have been possible without the initiative of our super respected government and its highly (Dis) qualified representatives. These alumni of WhatsApp university hold a very spec...

THE RISKIEST POSITION FOR CHASING YOUR DREAMS

If I had a penny for every time I heard the phrase, “Make your passion your work, and then you won’t work for a single day in your life.” Then, I’d have been a millionaire by now. It’s easier said than done. Pursuing your dreams takes you on a path that’s mostly filled with broken glass and you’re asked to walk barefoot. Our hard-wired mindset with a strong affinity for security pleads in front of us not to take risks. Even the heavenly results of a calculated risk associated with a venture make it seem like a dragon breathing fire on an individual drenched in gasoline. That’s the reality of this hard-wired mentality that irks for security. And this mentality is most prevalent in the ‘middle-class’ section of society. Among the three sections of society, the middle-class is most susceptible to this mentality. The other two classes namely, ‘The Rags’ and ‘The Riches’ often don’t suffer from this desire for security that much. I am not saying that it’s easier for these two to follow and ...

DARK SIDE OF THE INDIAN JOB MARKET – FROM AN HR’s PERSPECTIVE

First thing’s first, an HR’s only job is not to make rangolis. An HR performs many other duties. Most of them are indeed monotonous and boring, but not unimportant. Now that this is out of the way, there is one thing that I need to shed some light on. If at any point in your life during an interview, you’ve resorted to the statement, “I am a people person.” as the answer to the question, “Why did you choose HRM as your major?” then you need to read ahead. All those, including myself, who have claimed to believe in the forbidden line mentioned above have sooner or later fallen into the trap of a monotonous journey which is called an HR job profile (more about it in some future article). Don’t get me wrong, I am, in no way, bashing out on the industry or the workforce it employs. This happens to be my thoughts over something which I believe to be the unspoken truth of the current job market, which nobody talks about, with special reference to human resource management. As a student...
